Handicap Rules

The following is not part of standing rules but just a summary of where the club had got to in allocating handicaps to members ..

WGC Handicap Rules

If someone has not played ANY games for the club

They must either produce an official handicap from another club, and they have that adjusted under the “old’ system until they have 10 cards with WGC; or

They must submit 3 cards playing with WGC members that can be used to create their initial handicap. High scores on each hole will be reduced to a double bogey score at most. They then are under the “old’ system until they have played 10 cards with WGC.

New Handicap System – implemented when a person has played their 10th game

10 rounds                     Take lowest 3 gross scores

11/12 rounds                Take lowest 4 gross scores

13/14 rounds                Take lowest 5 gross scores

15/16 rounds                Take lowest 6 gross scores

17 rounds                     Take lowest 7 gross scores

18 rounds                     Take lowest 8 gross scores

19 rounds                     Take lowest 9 gross scores

20 rounds                     Take lowest 10 gross scores

To work out the gross score you need to take out the big numbers. So the most anyone can get on a hole is the equivalent score to what would be zero points for stableford for that person. So if they got a 12, but for them an 8 would have been zero points, they are given an 8 in calculating their “gross score”.

When you have taken the requisite number of scores, you then add them up, divide by the number of rounds, subtract 72, then multiply by 0.96. Then the new club handicap is to the first decimal point). You round up or down for that day’s playing handicap.

Example

Say a player has 18 rounds under the new system. You take the best 8 rounds, say they add up to 745, you then divide this by 8, subtract 72, multiply by 0.96 and it becomes 20.28. The handicap is 20.2. the playing handicap that day is 20.

If NOT 10 rounds – OLD system (take course rating as par for course (normally 72)

Category 1

Golf Handicaps of 5 or less

Buffer Zone = 0 to 1 shot

Adjustment factor = 0.1

Category 2

Golf Handicaps of 6 to 12 inclusive

Buffer Zone = 0 to 2 shots

Adjustment factor = 0.2

Category 3

Golf Handicaps of 13 to 20 inclusive

Buffer Zone = 0 to 3 shots

Adjustment factor = 0.3

Category 4

Golf Handicaps of 21 to 28 inclusive

Buffer Zone = 0 to 4 shots

Adjustment factor = 0.4

Category 5

Golf Handicaps of 29 to 36 inclusive

Buffer Zone = 0 to 5 shots

Adjustment factor = 0.5

Example

A 15 handicapper shooting a NET 70 (ie two shots better than their handicap) will some in 2 x 0.3 =0.6 shots.

A 22 handicapper shooting a NET 75 (ie three shots worse than handicap) will not change their handicap as they are in “buffer zone” of 4 shots. However if they had shot a NET 80, they would increase their handicap by 0.1 of a shot.
