Visas for Professional/Skilled People

Most skilled people attain visas through the skilled points test (permanent and regional—see below) or company supported visas.

 

Skilled Points Test - 175, 176, 885, 886, 475, 487 etc

The general processing time is from 5 months to 12 months.

 

 

 

Employer Nominated - 119, 121, 856, 857

This involves an Australian company proving to the Immigration authorities that they have a highly skilled vacancy, that they train their existing employees to improve their skills, and that they are financially sound. Then the visa applicant needs to show they have the required skills for the position.

Much of the paperwork for this kind of visa is required from the company (rather than the visa applicant). If you have any questions or wish to have an assessment done, please drop us a line to iscah.

Skilled Regional Visas (475 and 487)

This visa is targeted at those people who cannot meet the high independent passmark. There is a much lower passmark (currently 100 points of which the state government “give” you 10 points) for this category if a person is prepared to live in regional Australia for at least 2 years.


Visa subclass - 475 and 487
Visa period - 3 year temporary visa. A further one year visa is allowed if required. The idea is to try and meet criteria for a permanent visa in this time (see Pathways to Permanency below)
Main conditions - Must live in regional area for 2 years. Must work in regional area for 1 year. Not allowed to work, live or study in non regional area. Must abide by conditions to apply for other visas later (ie 175, 820 etc)
State Sponsorship Form - 1244
DIAC Form - 1276
DIAC Fee - $2060
Other DIAC Fees - If dependent adults on application do not have functional english, around $3000
Processing Office - DIAC Adelaide
DIMIA Processing Time - Has priority (around 4-6 months)
Definition of Regional - The areas currently listed are:
- New South Wales – except Sydney, Newcastle, the Central Coast and Wollongong;
- Queensland – except Brisbane and the Gold Coast;
- Victoria – except Melbourne metropolitan areas;
- Western Australia – except Perth metropolitan area;
- South Australia – entire state;
- Tasmania – entire state; and
- Northern Territory – entire state.
