Australia allows people to travel to Australia for periods of stay as a temporary residence. This can be under a variety of categories which I will not try and mention all of here.
However the main ones are as follows ...
Company Sponsored - 457
This involves an Australian company proving to the Immigration authorities that they have a skilled vacancy that cannot be filled through Australian workers, that they train their existing employees to improve their skills, and that they are financially sound.
The company is required to complete form 1067 and 1068. The visa applicant needs to complete form 1066. These can be e-mailed on request from Application Forms.

The period of the visa can be from 3 months up to 4 years and general processing is from 3-8 weeks.

State Territory Sponsored Business Owner - 163
This involves an overseas person intending to either establish their own business or buy an existing business in Australia. Then managing this business in Australia.
They must meet a variety of criteria but the main three being they have new personal assets of at least $300,000 AUD, a genuine business proposal for what they are going to do in Australia, and a background that can prove they have the skills for this. This background generally entails you having managed your own business with a turnover for 2 of last 4 years of at least $300,000 per annum. Or have been a senior manager in a business that turns over more than $1 million per year for the last 4 years.
This visa can lead to permanent residence through classes 845,846, 892 mainly if the business does well.

The visa lasts for 4 years and general processing is from 8-30 weeks.
